Lauren Stevenson is a keynote speaker at AAPS 2022 PharmSci 360. Her speech is titled: Surrogate Matrices – A Creative Solution to Scarcity, or Simply Sound Science?

Scarcity caused by supply chain issues during the Covid 19 pandemic prompted industry-wide rethinking regarding appropriate assay matrices. However, this question merits broader consideration. This presentation will delve into the scientific rationale regarding the preference for ‘authentic’ matrices and will use real world examples to question conventional wisdom, challenge past assumptions, and propose approaches that ensure sound science while simultaneously raising the bar for responsible, ethical utilization of resources with focus on cost-benefit for patients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the assumptions associated with utilization of authentic matrices in quantitative assays and when to question those assumptions
  • Understand nuances of what constitutes authentic versus surrogate matrix and how and when surrogate matrix is not only acceptable but appropriate
  • Develop a scientific approach to matrix selection that ensures accuracy of measurement as well as appropriate utilization of resources in terms of time, money and ethical considerations with goal of delivering best overall cost/benefit for patients
